Hope for Homeless
Do you ever drive down the street and see homeless people asking for money and want to help but don’t know if they are really going to spend that money on a necessity? I know I do.
We are always brainstorming different ways to “actively” give back to the community and giving to the homeless always come up. Like everyone else, we want to make sure we help out someone who really needs it and will use those resources for what they are intended for. How cool would it be to be able to actually WATCH someone’s journey from living on the streets, to getting cleaned up, finding a place to live, and getting a job, all while knowing YOU had a part in it?
Not too long after, we were brought to Robert, the founder of a non-profit called Cloud Covered Streets, where they give basic necessities to the homeless, and that’s where he introduced us to John and June. They are husband and wife who had been homeless together for 20 months. They are both hard working, honest and all around good people, that just had some tough situations and no family help and eventually it put them on the streets. June even said that how they wanted so bad to find a job, but “how do you go in for an interview looking like this?” Being a musician was John’s passion and he had played guitar for 35 years but sold it all before becoming homeless.
To start off, June and June got to shower, get their hair cut, and new clothes, and Robert gave John a new guitar! He also got them a local place to play and raise money to start their journey to a new life. It was an amazing turnout and John played the guitar and June sang. It was so inspiring to see them be in their element and shine! We teamed up and we were able to give $1,200 to help them with the first month’s rent and food. These 2 individuals could not have been more grateful and for everyone to have faith in them was inspiring!
Watching this couple go from where they were before, living on the streets, to where they are now, makes me feel so blessed for what we have and to never take anything for granted. Like it says in Proverbs 19:17 says, Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. I think the reward we get, is being entrusted with His money, to carry out His work on earth. Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides for us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up a treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:17-19)
